He sold his interest in this and went to Jamestown, New York, but in 1878 returned to Columbus, where he became engaged in the general mercantile business, and later became a member of firm of Yates & Smith.

After leaving this institution he taught one term and then became a clerk in a hardware store in Jamestown, New York, where he remained several years. This task he relinquished to engage in mercantile business on his own behalf. He conducted business enterprises in Pennsylvania in both Warren and Butler counties. November 3, 1886, he was elected treasurer of Warren County and served in that office for three years. In 1889, he was appointed deputy prothonotary of Warren County, and was elected to fill the office of prothonotary in November, 1891, and reelected to the same office in 1894.
