He was born near Philadelphia, PA, and moved to Butler County with his parents when fourteen years of age. He grew to maturity there, and served in the War of 1812. He married and settled on a portion of the Reep homestead, near the village of Fairview, where both he and his wife resided until their deaths. They were members of the Evangelical Lutheran church, and the parents of thir­teen children, only three of whom were still living by 1895.
