His boyhood and youth were spent in much the usual manner of farmers' sons, aiding in the labors of the fields and attending the local schools. In political sentiment, he was a strong Republican, but never cared for the honors or emoluments of public office. He was a consistent and faithful member of the Lutheran Church, and took an active part in the work of the Christian Endeavor Society.
