He was reared at home and acquired his education in the common schools of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and in Mount Union College, Mount Union, Ohio. In the fall of 1899 he entered the medical department of the University of Baltimore, graduating therefrom with honors, being president of his class; this was in the spring of 1903. After graduation he passed the State Medical Board, of Pennsylvania, and after a short period of relief work for some prominent physicians of Westmoreland County, settled in West Newton, Pennsylvania, where he built up an enviable practice.
He was a member of the Phi Chi (College) Fraternity, Monessen Lodge, No. 773, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and minor lodges. He held membership in the Presbyterian church, and in politics adhered to the principles of the Democratic party.
