General Notes: Husband - Matthew Barnes

He lived on his father's farm until after his mother's death in 1855. Matthew was either a favorite son or had a handicap that gave his mother great concern. Some say he was deaf. At any rate, his mother wrote in her will at length about his bequest which indicated that she was very doubtful that he would ever marry. She divided one hundred acres of land between Matthew and Eliza Jane, with the condition that if Matthew did not marry, Eliza Jane was to get the entire one hundred acres and was to be charged with the keeping of Matthew. She also wrote, in detail and at length, the conditions under which he would receive the land. However, Matthew did marry Nancy Paxton, and in the 1860 census he is listed as a member of John L. and Eliza Jane Barnes' household. Grand daughters of Eliza Jane are convinced that Matthew and his wife Nancy practically raised John Boyd and Orvetus Lloyd, twin sons of Eliza Jane. They were born in September of 1862. If Matthew and Nancy did indeed raise these boys, they must have married in the early 1860's.
