General Notes: Husband - James Barnes

Of Scotch-Irish descent, he and his wife were early settlers of Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

He was born in Ireland and came to the United States with his parents in 1803.

He lived on land owned by his father, Thomas, who in his will gave to James "the one hundred acres on which he now lives." James later acquired the one hundred and fifty acres willed to his brother John. James Barns was naturalized on August 24, 1820. In his oath he swore that he was a subject of Ireland and Great Britain. James and his wife were Presbyterians and were members of the Associate Church of Springfield, now the Springfield United Presbyterian Church

General Notes: Wife - Mary Alexander

In a very detailed will dated September 7, 1854 she made specific bequests and conditions concerning these bequests. She was very concerned about her son Matthew who is said to have been deaf. She willed one hundred acres of land to Matthew and Eliza Jane, to be divided equally between them only if Matthew married and "go to himself;" otherwise Eliza Jane was to inherit the full one hundred acres. But she charged Eliza Jane with the support and maintenance of Matthew as long as he lived. Mary Barns added a codicil to her will, dated September 22, 1855 [sic], giving support and maintenance to Thomas, as long as he lived. "The same to be charged on all the farm herein willed to my several children and they each to contribute according to quantity given each." This was later the basis of a law suit, and it resulted in the heirs buying a small farm in the Utica area for Thomas, thus relieving them of his support.
