General Notes: Husband - John S. Shumaker

On the home farm he was reared and in the public schools acquired his education, assisting in the labors of the fields when not busy with his school books. He continued to assist his father up to the time of his marriage. He then took charge of the home farm, which he operated up to the time of his father's death, when he inherited one hundred and thirteen acres of land, according to the terms of the will. In 1890 he sold this property to the Madison and Sewickley Coal Company and purchased the Moore farm of one hundred and two acres of land. This he sold in 1891 to the coal company, reserving only fifteen acres, on which, the following year, he erected a commodious and attractive country residence and enjoyed a rest made possible by the income derived from the sale of his rich coal lands.
He was a Republican in his political views. He belonged to the United Brethren church and the Royal Arcanum.
