General Notes: Husband - Tobias Shumaker

It was on his father's farm near Madison, Westmoreland County, that he was born, and there he grew to manhood apprenticing himself to the black-smith's trade and after completing his term of indenture opened a shop where New Madison now stands. He was an industrious man who prospered in his business undertakings and accumulated a valuable property, becoming owner of three hundred and fifty acres of the richest coal lands in that section of Pennsylvania, but he did not live to see the development of these mineral deposits.
He voted the first Abolition ticket cast in Westmoreland County, and he was also a Whig and later a Republican in his political affiliation. Of the United Brethren church an active member, he served as one of its officers for several years.
