He acquired his education in the public schools of his native county, and at a suitable age was apprenticed to learn the trade of carpentering. This he followed for some time and then engaged in oil production. In 1888 he purchased a farm of one hundred and thirty acres in Vernon township, [Crawford County, PA?,] and located there, his farm yielding satisfactory results under his capable management. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. He took an active interest in the welfare of the community, and served as supervisor of Vernon township with great executive ability.
