His father was the famous Commodore Murray, whose ancestors came from Scotland to the colonies in 1715.

He came to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1807, and was a prominent lawyer and a progressive business man, being a promoter of one of the first rolling mills built in western Pennsylvania. He served with ability and distinction as mayor of Pittsburgh.
