He was born in Allegheny County, PA, and became the possessor of the old homestead in Franklin township, Butler County. He was a prosperous farmer and for a short time a merchant. He had three children, two sons and one daughter. One of the sons was a lawyer in Pittsburg, the other a merchant in Beaver Falls.
