General Notes: Husband - Dr. James B. McElrath

Jackson Center, Mercer Co, PA

He was educated in the public and private schools and the Mercer High-schools under instructions of Prof. Warner, now congressman from Ohio. He taught school at the age of eighteen years. He read medicine with his father, and attended Jefferson Medical College for over three years, also Charity Hospital. He graduated from the medical college in 1871, and began his practice with his father at Jackson Centre. He served as secretary of the Board of Pension Examiners for Mercer County, and was vice-president of the Mercer County Medical Society. In politics he was a Republican. He served in Company F, Fifty-fifth Pennsylvania Militia, and afterward in Company M, Sixth Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, until the close of the war. [HMC 1888, 1012]

He attended the Union High School of Mercer, graduated from Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, and was an active and able practitioner of Jackson Centre for a period of thirty-two years. He was the owner of a fine farm, on which he resided, and the substantial honors which he earned were founded both on his useful services as a physician and a citizen and the unswerving integrity of his character. [HMC 1909, 928]
