General Notes: Husband - William J. McElhaney

He was reared and educated in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where he was a prosperous farmer.

The public schools furnished him with a good practical education, and upon its completion he engaged in farming. He had a farm of four hundred and thirty acres in Independence township and a further farm of one hundred and eighteen acres, and these were devoted to general farming, to the raising of short horns, and to the breeding of sheep, of which he had many fine varieties. He installed all the most modern improvements on his farms, and work on them was simplified and made practical to the utmost. A part of his farm was the old homestead of his grandfather McElhaney, in fact all but thirty-two acres of what he owned was the property of his grandfather. He made his own way from boyhood, and established himself independently when he was but twenty-three years of age, renting a farm of his father for eight years, paying two hundred dollars per year; he then bought the place and made it his home. His patriotism was a distinguishing trait in his character. In the public affairs of the township and the county he was very active in behalf of the Republican party, and was honored with public office a number of times. Among these offices may be mentioned: Road commissioner several times, auditor and school director. In religious faith he was a Presbyterian.
