General Notes: Husband - James W. Rowland

He remained with his parents until the fall of 1863, when he settled in Franklin, Pennsylvania, and engaged with W. A. Cooper, as bookkeeper, remaining with him until 1868. He left Cooper and entered the First National Bank of Franklin in May, 1868, as bookkeeper, afterward teller, filling that position until the spring of 1869, when he resigned and embarked in the merchant tailoring business, carrying on that business until August 5, 1873, when he opened the Emlenton Bank as its cashier. In the fall of the same year he removed his family to that place. He was also Director, and Secretary and Treasurer of the Emlenton, Shippenville and Clarion R. R., taking an active part in its construction. [HVC 1879, 548]

He was educated in the common schools of his native county, and subsequently took a course of training in Duff's Commercial College, Pittsburgh. He lived on a farm until he was twenty-five years old. In 1863 he removed to Oil City, and soon thereafter engaged with W. A. Cooper, of Franklin, in the grocery and express business. In 1868 he entered the First National Bank of Franklin as bookkeeper and afterward teller, but after one year embarked in merchant tailoring. In 1873 he came to Emlenton to open the Emlenton Bank, and after that date was a resident of the borough. Mr. Rowland was interested in many of the enterprises of his adopted town, and in many others even beyond the limits of the state. He became interested in the Emlenton and Shippenville Railroad Company, and for many years was a director, secretary, and treasurer of that corporation. He was one of the projectors of the Oil City Fuel-Supply Company, in which he held the position of director; he became equally interested in the Emlenton Gas Light and Fuel Company, and was its president. He was also president of the Union Light and Heat Company of Foxburg and of the Union Improvement Company, Morgantown, West Virginia. After 1883 he was a stockholder and director in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach Railroad Company, which was the owner of the seaside resort near Norfolk, Virginia. He was an active member of the Masonic order and an earnest Republican. [HVC 1890, 938]
