General Notes: Husband - Alexander McCullough, Jr.

Remaining with his parents until twenty-three years old, he then went west in search of fortune. Locating in Will County, IL, he rented land, and for three years carried on general farming and stock raising. Migrating then to Iowa, he stopped while on the way at Rock Island, IL, being there at the time the railroad was completed to that point. Arriving in Benton County, IA, Mr. McCullough purchased a tract of land, and afterwards entered three hundred and twenty acres of government land, paying $1.25 an acre. At that time there were no railways in that section of the Union, and much of the land was still owned by the government. He remained in Iowa eight years, and then, at the solicitation of his parents, returned to East Lackawannock Township to take charge of the old homestead, subsequently succeeding to its ownership. [HMC 1909, 895]

He completed his education in the Mercer Academy. In the spring of 1851 he went west and engaged in farming and stock raising on a rented farm for three years, thence to Iowa and continued the same vocation for seven years. In 1862 he returned to the parental homestead to care for and protect his aged parents and an invalid sister, Mary E. He was been a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church for thirty years, led the singing in said church for twenty-five years, was assistant superintendent of the Sabbath-schools of the church for fifteen years, and was one of the delegates to the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church which met in Cincinnati in May, 1885. [HMC 1888, 896]
