General Notes: Husband - Robert Smith

He was born in the North of Ireland, and came to America in 1801, accompanied by his family, consisting of his wife and two children. The voyage, which lasted six months, was extremely tempestuous, and among its gruesome traditions is that one of the passengers being in a dying condition, whales followed the ship for days in the expectation of seizing the body when it should be thrown overboard. On reaching America Mr. Smith and his family found a home in Ligonier Valley, Fairfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, being among the pioneers of that region. Becoming the owner of a farm of about one hundred acres, Mr. Smith cleared a large part of it and for many years engaged in general farming. When about sixty-five years old he had the misfortune to injure one of his feet in a threshing machine and was thus compelled to walk with crutches during the remainder of his life. He and all his family were members of the Seceders or United Presbyterian church, being identified with Old Fairfield Church and active in its work and support.
