He came from Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, [same source: from near Carlisle, Cumberland County,] about 1770, and settled in Allegheny County, nine miles above Pittsburgh, on lands later occupied by Homestead and the city poor-farm.

With his three sons, William, John and Denny, he settled in the Monongahela valley.
