He spent his school days in Clay Township, Butler County, PA, whence he had been brought by his parents when a lad of five years, and where he lived on a farm until his eighteenth year. At that time he de­cided to start to make his own way in the world, and subsequently secured employ­ment in the oil fields of the Alleghany River, in Armstrong County. Later he moved to Allegheny Township, Butler Coun­ty, where he was engaged as an oil producer.
