General Notes: Husband - Abraham Crunkleton Prather

After his father had located in Forest County, PA, he returned to Franklin County and learned tanning. He was drafted for military service in the war of 1812, and on the expiration of his term visited his father at East Hickory. The land in Cornplanter Township, Venango County, where he had lived as a boy in the winter of 1801-02 being still unoccupied, he decided to complete the purchase, and with the exception of the time he served as a volunteer in the defense of Erie and other brief absences passed the remainder of his life in the township. He built a log house on the Warren road east of Plumer, and later a frame dwelling at that location, where he followed tanning and became a respected resident of the neighborhood. For many years he was a trustee of the Associate Reformed Church at Plumer. [CAB, 366]

About the year 1798, his father took up a tract of land in Venango County, PA, and with his two sons, Abraham and Robert, rode from Maryland to Venango County on horseback bringing with them the necessaries of life and some of the comforts prepared by the mother. The father remained with the boys for some time and saw them settled in a log cabin, then left them and returned to Maryland (Franklin County, PA, actually - they had moved from Maryland to Franklin County, PA, then to Huntingdon County, then to Venango County). During the early period the boys were molested by a roving band of Indians which occasionally ransacked the cabin and destroyed their crops. This fact, together with a dispute with Holland Land Company concerning the land they occupied for several years caused them to
return to Maryland (or Franklin County, PA). The son, Abraham Crunkleton Prather, finally returned and finding the tract still unoccupied, purchased it, built a log cabin, and ever afterward made it his home, clearing the tract of it's timber, and converting it finally into a well tilled farm of 250 acres. He prospered and from time to time bought more land on some of which was valuable pine timber. He also operated a tannery. During the War of 1812 he shouldered his musket and with his brother-in-law, James Ricketts, walked from Venango County to Erie, PA, (about 60 miles) and they enlisted in the militia. Abraham C. Prather was one of the most highly respected men in his county, very energetic in business and capable, kind and jovial in disposition.
