From two years of age he resided upon a farm, which was a part of the old Read farm, belonging to his maternal grandfather, which was given to his mother. It comprised a valuable tract of one hundred acres, well improved and placed under a high state of cultivation. His father continued to operate this place until called from this life.
His boyhood and youth were passed in the usual manner of farmer lads, he attending the common schools and assisting in the labors of the fields during the summer months. He early became familiar with farming in all its various departments, and became one of the skillful agriculturists in Lawrence township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. In his political views he coincided with the principles of the Democracy, and religiously he held membership in the Presbyterian Church of Clearfield. He was a member of the Golden Eagles, of Glen Richey.
