Roy Reeser, oldest Mogadore resident
As the oldest resident of Mogadore, Roy C. Reeser Sr. became an expert on the community and often was referred to as the village's walking history book.
Mr. Reeser, 94, died Thursday at his home following a long illness.
Born in Akron, he moved with his family to Mogadore at an early age. His father, Jerry Reeser, ran a village cider mill and apple butter factory from the turn of the century until 1910.
The oldest alumnus of Mogadore High School at the time of his death, Mr. Reeser earned an associate degree in accounting from Actual Business College. He began his cost accounting career with Firestone, where he was employed from 1909 to 1920. He moved to B.F. Goodrich in 1922, staying until his retirement in 1954.
BEING retired didn't mean that Mr. Reeser was finished working, however. He opened a cost accounting business at his home for small businesses and completed individual income tax returns.
He also was associated with Vial Tire Co. as an accountant from 1955 until after his 90th birthday in 1980.
Despite his long work record, Mr. Reeser always seemed to have time for community service.
He was a member of the Mogadore school board from 1925 to 1932, served 10 years on the Village Council, was trustee and sexton of the village cemetery for 30 years, and was a trustee and treasurer of Greenwood cemetery in Mogadore from 1940 to 1960.
He was named superintendent of the cemetery in 1960 and began a lengthy project of restoring records and defining grave sections and locating old grave sites.
Mr. Reeser generally worked about 50 hours a month on cemetery business, but would only accept $20 a month pay, aout 40 cents an hour for his services.
Mr. Reeser also taught a Sunday school class of young boys from 1925 to 1970 at Mogadore Christian Church. He told a reporter several years ago that some of those in his classes had gone on "to be grandfathers, just like me."
He was a member of his church's choir and an elder and treasurer of the church for 22 years. His wife of 63 years, Irene Reeser, was the church's financial secretary for 25 years. She died in 1979.
MR. REESER also was a member of Akron Lodge 83 F&AM, the Yusef Khan Grotto, and was a former member of the Mogadore Lions Club.
He leaves a daughter, Doris Sype of Mogadore; son, Roy C. Jr. of Redington Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
