She was born and reared to adult age in Edinburgh, Scotland. She immigrated to America with her father and was married to Andrew Porter, of Richland township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, where they resided during his life.

When a widow seventy-five years of age, in the year of 1852, she accompanied her son, Andrew Jr., and her daughter, Anne, as missionaries to the Chippewa Indians (in whom her brother, Walter, had been so deeply interested) at the Bear River Mission, now known as Petoskey, Michigan. [RLFT, 27]
