He was educated in the common schools. He enlisted in Company H, Fifth Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery, at its organization, and was mustered out with it at the close of the Rebellion. On his return from the war he resumed farming, owning two farms. He was elected justice of the peace in 1888, and was a Republican.
