He was born on the family farm in East Pike Run township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He attended the subscription schools when a boy, and was reared to agricultural pursuits. He later came to own the old homestead, consisting of 230 acres of prime land. In politics he was a Republican, and served as school director for several years. His wife was a member of the M. E. Church.
