He prepared for college in the public schools of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, and in 1878 entered the freshman class at Washington and Jefferson college from which he graduated in 1882, being the third of the family that could claimed that institution as alma mater. He read law with his father and was admitted to the bar in 1885, after which time he successfully engaged in the practice of his profession. He was an active democrat, a member of the Sons of Veterans, a printer by trade, which he learned in his younger days.
