General Notes: Husband - Silas Kerr

The Titusville Herald, Titusville, PA
Silas Kerr, aged 82 years, one of the oldest and best known citizens of this section of the country, died at his home at White Oak on the Spring Creek road Monday morning of a general breaking down of the system due to old age. He had been totally blind for the past six years and had been confined to his bed for six weeks. Deceased was born in Oil Creek township and always lived there with the exception of a short period when he lived in Titusville and Jamestown. He was formerly a very prominent lumber man, engaged in the business in Warren and Crawford counties at the time when lumber was plentiful. When a young man, he began work in the woods as a jobber for Brewer, Watson & Co at the old Buxton mill a few miles south of Titusville. Later he branched out and was extensively engaged in the manufacture of lumber for himself. His first mill was near the Hannah Kerr farm in Oil Creek township on a tract now owned by Winfield Kerr. From there he went to the James McGuire farm where he conducted a large business during the oil excitement. He owned and operated mills on the farm where he died and on the farm where his son, Garrison Kerr lived, besides four different mills in Warren County at Stony Hollow, Sanford, Garland and Selkirk. At one time he was associated with the late Edgar Hale of this city in the important Kerr and Hale mill below East Titusville. He was engaged in the business up to six years ago when he lost his eyesight. About thirty-five years ago he bought the farm on which he resided from that date to the time of his death. He cleared the ground which was largely forest then and erected the buildings and made one of the best farms in this section of the country. While lumbering for Brewer, Watson & Co, he married Miss Mary Tubbs, who preceded him to the grave a number of years ago. To their union were born eight children, four boys and four girls, of whom the following are living: Mrs. Esther Whitford, who lives at the old homestead, Mrs. Mary Perkins of Corry, Garrison Kerr of White Oak and Mrs. Ina Thomas of Hydetown. Deceased was a man of industry and good judgment. He was strictly honest and active in the discharge of his duties as a man and citizen, charitable by nature and generous to a fault. Funeral services will be held in his memory at the family residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Interment will be in Union (Henderson) cemetery."

He furnished Colonel Edwin L. Drake with lumber to build his derrick and frame work around the world's first oil well; this is documented at the Drake Well Museum, Titusville, Pennsylvania.
