He was a stone-mason by trade, living in Richmond Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

He and his wife were natives of Otsego County, New York. He came to Chautauqua County, New York, and followed farming for a number of years, then came to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, where he remained until his death.
