General Notes: Husband - John McKinney

He was born in in Belfast, Ireland, whither his branch of the family was planted in the sixteenth century. He emigrated to America and landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1789 or 1790. He removed to Lancaster, and in 1794 came with General John W. Irvine to western Pennsylvania and helped survey and lay out the town of Warren. He took up a large tract of land extending from the mouth of Brokenstraw Creek to several miles north of Youngsville. On this land he settled, erected a number of saw mills, and engaged extensively in the lumber business. He returned to Lancaster and married.
He acquired a great deal of land and accumulated what was considered a large fortune. He served in the War of 1812 with the rank of lieutenant.

The first resident settler of Brokenstraw township, Warren County, Pennsylvania, was probably John McKinney, who came in the summer of 1795, with commissioners appointed by the governor to survey that part of the country. "McKinney," the Hon. Samuel P. Johnson said, "was then a fresh import from the Emerald Isle, young, vigorous, and adventurous; had first halted at Lancaster, where his services were engaged by the commissioners. His visit here had given him a view of this valley, and a knowledge of the fact that there was land here to be had for the taking." Accordingly he returned the next year, and took up what became known as the McKinney farm, about one and a half miles east of Youngsville, on the road to Irvineton. There he lived two or three years alone, clearing the forests and subduing the obstinate wilderness. He then returned to Lancaster and married Miss Arthur, who afterward lived there with him and reared a family which became prominent beyond the town limits for energy and integrity. McKinney's house afterward became the hotel of the settlement. He was shrewd, hospitable, genial, and thoroughly democratic. He was one of the most extensive farmers of the neighborhood, and was a heavy dealer in lumber, horses, cattle, etc., etc. He had a large family of boys, and one daughter. The children of his son, Arthur, later occupied the old homestead. [HWC 1887, 402]

He was born in Ulster County, Ireland, in 1770, came to Philadelphia in 1790, and labored as a farmer. In 1792 he carried the chain to survey western Pennsylvania, including Warren County, with General Irvine, and in 1794 located 1,000 acres west of General Irvine's tract, where he settled and reared his family. [HWC 1887, BP 64]
