General Notes: Husband - James McKinney

He was born in 1811. [HCC 1885, 899]
He was reared on the farm, and at the age of thirteen he carried the mail from Mayville, New York, to Meadville, Pennsylvania, by way of Titusville, serving in that capacity till 1827. In those days there were but few houses between Meadville and Titusville. He afterward engaged in the lumber business, continuing at the same until 1866. He then went to farming in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he remained until 1870, when he sold out and bought a farm near Meadville. [HCC 1885, 899]

He received as thorough an education as the times afforded and became a merchant, farmer and lumberman. He was prominent in his community, serving as justice of the peace and holding local offices. He took an active part in the state militia, serving as major and colonel for a number of years. In 1870, having met with business reverses, he removed to Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and up to the time of his death lived on a farm near Meadville. He was a quiet unassuming gentleman, the soul of honor, and held in high regard by a very wide circle of friends. Physically he was tall, erect, and for his years, well-preserved at the time of his death.

He attended the public schools after which he became a farmer and lumberman, continuing his father's assistant until the death of the latter. He resided for many years in Pittsfield, Warren County, Pennsylvania, where he was extensively engaged in lumbering. He enlisted in the army for the Mexican war and attained the rank of major. He was a Democrat in politics, and he and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church. [GPHNP, 364]
