He came to Venango County, Pennsylvania, with his father and brothers about 1797. He lived with his father until the latter's death, when he became owner of the home farm.

He was born about 1785 in either northern Ireland or Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. He was probably brought to Sugarcreek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, from Huntingdon County, by his parents in 1796.
