General Notes: Husband - Samuel Work

During his childhood, the family moved to Indiana County, Pennsylvania, settling on the farm commonly known as the J. L. Work farm. They made their way over an Indian trail, on pack horses, carrying with them their children and household goods. Samuel spent his youth on the farm.

"I recall this incident, as told by the parents: James Y. Brady, Esq., was to perform the marriage ceremony for my parents. He being elected to his position recently, had never officiated at a wedding, and desirous of giving entire satisfaction, he had Mr. McHenry and Sallie Work, afterwards Mrs. Steele, stop on their way thither, across the country over a path through the woods, found a log by the wayside for a platform, and practiced his intended ceremony. It must have proven a success, for many years of pleasure the bride and groom spent together. His entire life was spent peacefully and quietly in the vicinity of his childhood home. Although very quiet in his manner, he quite often was jocose. He was not a large, strong looking man, but very healthy. He was ill but one or two days, passing away surrounded by his entire surviving family. He was a devoted christian man. Although not a leader among men, he was a true follower of Him who came to save. Quietly doing his duty, you would always find him in his place at church, or else where he felt he should be. When the country needed them, he gave three sons to its service, one of whom never came back. 'Robert, the youngest, the bravest and best,' fell in the Battle of the Wilderness. Many gave precious gifts, but surely this was a great one, for of ten children, there were only four left, others dying in childhood. There is but one of this family living, James I. Work, the author of this sketch."
