He was born in Sweden, where he learned the glass making trade. He came to the United States and settled in Glassboro, New Jersey, later removing to Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was in the employ of the Hamilton Bottle Works. He was later connected with the Standard Plate Glass Company of Butler. He was a Republican, a member of the Lutheran Church, and belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
