General Notes: Husband - William Park Humes

He was educated in the common schools adjacent to his home, and remained at home on the farm until he attained the age of thirty years. He then entered into partnership with his brother, John F. Humes, and they established a general store at Manordale, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, but later he purchased his brother's interest and conducted the business alone up to the time of his decease. The store was in a small log building, and he was the owner of the first iron safe that was in the town, a small one that could be carried off by two men, yet the people brought their money and valuable papers to be deposited therein. The postoffice at Manordale was established in 1854, and Mr. Humes was appointed postmaster, in which capacity he served until 1870, in which year he was succeeded by L. M. Ryckman, who served until 1875, when Mr. Humes was again appointed and served until his resignation in the year 1883.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church at Murrysville, in which he held the offices of trustee, secretary, treasurer, and leader of the choir. He kept a strict account of every cent paid in to build the church, the list of names being many feet long, and gave every person credit for the amount subscribed, whether large or small, and for his faithful service, through the recommendation of his pastor, he was presented with a fine gold watch from the members of the church, which was later in the possession of and highly prized by his son, Charles S. Humes. For a number of years he cast his vote with the Democratic party, but later gave his allegiance to the candidates of the Prohibition party. He served his township as school director for several years. He was for some time a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
