At one time he was the oldest Methodist preacher in Westmoreland County, and with only two exceptions in the Pittsburgh Conference.
He resided in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, until twenty-one years of age, when he entered on the ministry. His first preaching appointment was in Fayette County (Fayette Circuit), embracing half of that county and a part of West Virginia; his next, Somerset Circuit; his third, Connellsville Circuit, which then embraced all of Westmoreland County. He was then made for four years presiding elder of the Uniontown district, which also included Westmoreland County. He was fifty-nine years or more in the ministry, twelve as a local preacher and forty-seven as an itinerant. He eventually retired from regular preaching, although he continued to preach on special occasions, such as dedications, and at funerals. There was probably no minister in America who traveled so far on horseback, preached so many sermons, married so many couples, administered so many sacraments and baptisms, and attended so many funerals as Rev. Samuel Wakefield. About 1854, Allegheny College, in recognition of his great learning, conferred upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. He wrote largely for the religious press, and was the author of a work on "Theology," which was introduced into the course of study for young ministers and was extensively circulated. He also served four years as presiding elder of the Allegheny District.
He attained to great prominence in the M. E. church, was a doctor of divinity, and was the author of numerous theological and musical works. He was for a period of nearly seventy-five years a member of the Pittsburgh M. E. conference, and was presiding elder for a number of years. He was a member of the State legislature for one term during the 1860's.
He was one of the most remarkable men of his time. Entering the ministry of the M. E. church at an early age he was a leading divine of that denomination, and a member of the Pittsburgh Conference for eighty years, a record of continuous service unparalleled in this country. He was the author of seven volumes of sacred music, of an English Grammar, a work on Theology, that became a text book in many of the seminaries for the training of the ministry, and in his ninety-second year published a volume of sermons, entitled "Gospel Tidings," that contained thirty-two masterpieces of the sermonizer's art.
He lived on a farm most of his life. He was peculiarly blessed in having a wife who managed the farm and reared the family, thus leaving him free to devote his time and talents to his great life work.
He and his wife had ten children,-five sons and five daughters,-all living in 1882.
