General Notes: Husband - James Alexander Nelson

Accompanied by his wife and two children, he left Franklin, PA, his native town, in 1837, and with his father, brothers and sisters, and their families, came to Mercer County and located in Springfield Township on a tract of land which his father the previous year had purchased, paying for it with gold which he brought with him in his saddlebags. For the first few years of his residence there he occupied a log cabin, but this in after years gave way to a substantial frame house. None of the conveniences that now make a rural life so attractive were then in evidence, there being no railways in the state and no nearby markets. Cattle were driven to Philadelphia and New York City, and passengers and mail were transported from place to place in the stage coach, drawn by two horses, which daily passed through the town. By sturdy industry he cleared and improved a fine farm, and then, with characteristic enterprise and forethought, he established the Mount Union Nursery and began the propagation of fruit, shade and ornamental trees. These he sold in great numbers throughout a wide strip of country, becoming widely known. At the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia he received a medal for his fine display of fruits, and subsequently exhibited the products of his nurseries at various county and state fairs, always securing a fair share of the premiums awarded. On the homestead which he improved he spent his remaining days. [HMC 1909, 909]
