He was of English parentage, but was born in the northern part of Virginia. From the place of his birth he removed to Frederick County, Maryland, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits. He served in the Revolutionary war, later died and was buried near his home.

He served with distinction in the Revolutionary War, and was a prominent figure in the affairs of Maryland in that period.
