For the 1860 census, he listed his place of birth as "son of the sea", i.e. he was born on board ship while his parents were crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Other sources say he was born in Ireland or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

They lived on the Moffitt homestead until 1869 when they moved to the farm that he had purchased from his sister and brother-in-law, McElhinney.

He and his wife had nine children.
