He was born on the family homestead farm in Jackson township, Butler County, PA. He received a common school education and lived with his parents until 1886, when he became connected with the Zelienople flouring mills. In 1889 he formed a partnership with C. W. Keefer, purchased the mill, and oper­ated it until March, 1892, when he bought out his partner, and became sole proprietor. Politically, he was a Democrat, and he was connected with the English Lutheran church of Zelienople.
