He was born in Franklin, Penn­sylvania, and was educated in the common and high schools of that city. For several years he was connected with the Venango Water Company as director and superintendent, then resigned and engaged in contracting, oil pro­duction and real estate. He was a member of the Franklin Presbyterian Church, and a Dem­ocrat in politics.
