General Notes: Husband - John Lindsay Hanna

Until twenty-one years of age he remained on the farm. For some time he was connected with the Licking furnace, in Clarion County, PA. He then read medicine with Dr. Judd, of Greenville, for two years. Following this he was in the insurance business in Utica. He was the first resident agent in Venango County. He, after three years, removed to Franklin and continued the insurance business, in connection with real estate, until 1862. Subsequently he became an operator and producer in the oil line. In 1864, he engaged in the manufacture of brick in order to obtain the same for the brick block, known as the Opera House, on the corner of 13th and Elk streets. He was later engaged in oil, farming, making cheese, at his N. Sandy cheese factory, real estate, and the brick business. [HVC 1879, 487]

He received his education in the common schools. In 1855 he removed to Franklin, PA, and engaged in the real estate and insurance business, which he continued until 1863. After that date his attention was given, in part, to dealing in real estate. In 1863 he organized the Franklin Gas Company and the Venango Water Company, and was president of the latter twenty-five years. In 1864 he, with others, organized the Exchange Hotel Company, whose building was destroyed by fire in 1870. In 1865 he erected the Hanna block on Thirteenth street, which was burned in 1886. In its day it was the largest and finest building in Franklin. He also established a brickyard in the Third ward of Franklin, and carried on that business for twenty years.

He received a good education and remained on the farm until he attained the legal age, then went to Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and became connected with the Licking Furnaces; later he went to Greenville, Mercer County, where he studied medicine with Dr. Judd. He never followed the medical profession, however, but located at Utica, Venango county, where he established himself in the insurance business, being the first resident agent in the country. After a successful business in Utica he moved to Franklin, Pennsylvania, where he continued the insurance business, adding real estate and operating in oil production. In 1864 he engaged in brickmaking, building the Hanna Block in Franklin with brick from his own yard. Even into his eighty-seventh year, he was active and vigorous, retaining all his faculties of mind and body. He was an active member of the Presbyterian church, and for many years was an elder. Politically he was a strong Democrat. [GPHAV, 963]
