Walter A. Exley, 82, a former resident of 13 E. Fifth St. and a retired mail carrier for the Oil City Post Office, died at 11:10 am Wednesday in the Orchard Park IOOF Manor at Grove City, where he had been living since June of 1976.
His death followed an illness of 18 months.
He was born July 3, 1894, at Kossuth, a son of George F. and Catherine Anna Berlin Exley. He had been a lifelong resident of Oil City.
His wife, the former Naomi L. Krumm, died August 21, 1970.
Mr. Exley worked for the US Post Office here on the South Side as a carrier for 36 years, retiring November 1, 1966.
He had been a 50-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and was presented a life membership. He was also awarded a 50-year pin and was
a past noble grand of Oil City IOOF Lodge 580. He also was a member of Oil City Lodge 719, F. & A.M., Venango Lodge of Perfection and New Castle Consistory.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. James D. (Shirley) Schwab of Oil City and Mrs. Charles D. (Jean) Morrow of Kennerdell RD 1; a son Robert E. Exley of Oil City; a sister, Mrs. C. Gerry Sweet of Erie; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A son, Walter A. Exley Jr., was killed in World War II and a grandson, Bruce A. Schwab, also is deceased
Removal was made to the Louis H. Osenider Funeral Home where friends may call after 2 pm today and where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm today.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Friday in the funeral home with Rev. Donald Mitchell, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery.
