He was born on the home farm in Mt. Pleasant township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, on the headwaters of Raccoon creek, where he grew to manhood. He was a farmer, in politics, first, a Whig, then a Know-nothing, afterward becoming a Republican; he and his wife were members of the Mt. Prospect Presbyterian Church.
