He was born at Huntingdon, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, where he resided until about twenty years of age, when he went to the village of Orbisonia, Huntingdon County, laid out by his father. He there engaged in mercantile business, milling and overseeing a number of farms in the neighborhood.
