His father was a minister of the established Church of England. His grandfather came from Scotland to Ireland at the time of the battle of the Boyne.

He was a business man in the old country, carrying on a tannery and several stores. He located near Concord, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, in 1797, and engaged in farming.

He and his wife had fourteen children, of whom thirteen were reared.
