General Notes: Husband - Robert Elder

He came to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with his parents in 1730. At the close of the revolutionary war he emigrated to Elders Ridge, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and became the father of ten children. His descendants were quite numerous in Indiana County; they intermarried with the Colemans, Robinsons, Nesbits, Russels, Lairds and Barnetts.

The progenitor of the family in America, he was born at Dromore, County Down, Ireland, and was of Scotch extraction. He came to the American Colonies in 1730, locating in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, about five miles from Harrisburg, and after the close of the Revolutionary war went to Indiana County with his family, making the journey over the mountains with pack horses, and locating in what later became Conemaugh township, in the wilderness. Here the family erected a temporary hut in the woods, and later succeeded in building a cabin from hewed logs, which structure was subsequently used as a blockhouse. In this building the pioneer died in 1790 or 1791, his wife surviving until April 15, 1813. They were buried in Ebenezer Church cemetery. [HIC 1913, 960] It appears that there is confusion between this Robert Elder, his son Robert, and his grandson Robert.
