After attending the district school, he studied three years at Tidioute, Warren County, Pennsylvania, and later attended the Bryant and Stratton Business College of Buffalo, New York. He was an independent Democrat, and served as road commissioner, school director and supervisor. Like his father, he favored the Lutheran Church in his religious views.
