He was reared in Elizabeth township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and educated at the University of Wooster, Ohio. He began the study of law in November, 1878, with Maj. R. E. Stewart, of Pittsburgh; was admitted to the Allegheny county bar February 20, 1880, and in November of the same year located in McKeesport, where he resided, with offices both in that borough and Pittsburgh.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church; served a term as councilman of his ward in McKeesport, of which body he was elected chairman in 1888. He was a member of the board of directors of the People's Bank of McKeesport; was solicitor for that institution, and also assistant solicitor for the McKeesport & Belle Vernon Railroad company. In politics he was a democrat.
