General Notes: Husband - John H. Rodgers

He was an early and substantial farmer of Crawford County, Pennsylvania. He was educated in the public schools of Jamestown and in the seminary at that point, assisting his father on the farm until he was twenty-two years of age. In August, 1862, he enlisted at Espyville, Pennsylvania, in Company H, One Hundred and Forty-fifth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, under Colonel McCreery, of Erie. At the bloody battle of Antietam he was taken prisoner and sent to Libby prison, which was an old abandoned tobacco warehouse. Thence he was transferred to Belle Isle and after three weeks exchanged and afterward rejoined his company. He participated in all the battles and campaigns of the Army of the Potomac, and, although wounded at Spottsylvania Court House, insisted on forming in the ranks, and was not mustered out of the service until May 1, 1865, when he received his honorable discharge at Burkeville, Virginia. At the conclusion of his military service he returned home and remained on the farm until his death, inheriting the property at the decease of his father. Mr. Rodgers was always firm in his support of the Republican Party and was an active member of the G. A. R. until the last, and in his religious faith was a United Presbyterian.
