He may have lived in New York before he went to Wisconsin, where he was commissioned a lieutenant in order to form a volunteer regiment for the Union Army. After the Civil War was over, he moved to Independence, Iowa, then to Pickering in Nodaway County, Missouri, in 1881. On 26 September 1883 at Maryville, Missouri, he received a laceration of the right lung when he fired a cannon at a soldiers' reunion. He died three-fourths of an hour later.
