Descendants of Peter Patterson Greenlee



First Generation


1. Peter Patterson Greenlee was born on 6 Jun 1825 in Mercer, Mercer Co, PA and died 23 Oct or 24 Oct 1864 in Toledo, Tama Co, IA at age 39.

He and his brother James went from Pennsylvania to Iowa in the autumn of 1855 and entered government land in Tama County. Mary Jane Guiler went to Iowa the following year, and after their marriage they went to their little cabin home on the prairie where Traer was later located. They cheerfully bore the trials and hardships of a frontier life together until 1863, when in answer to his country's call, he enlisted in the Ninth Iowa Cavalry. The day after his eldest child, Margaret, was buried, he bade goodbye to his wife and remaining children, and went with his company to guard the railroad running into Little Rock, Arkansas. In September, 1864, he was given a furlough and went home, where he died six weeks later.

Peter married Mary Jane Guiler, daughter of John Guiler and Margaret Aiken, on 19 Feb 1856 in Washington, Washington Co, IA. Mary was born 12 May 1831 or 1832 in Irwin Twp, Venango Co, PA.

Children from this marriage were:

   2 F    i. Margaret E. Greenlee was born on 7 Jan 1857 and died on 27 Aug 1863 at age 6.

   3 F    ii. Mary Emmeline Greenlee was born on 8 Oct 1858 and died on 6 Jun 1890 at age 31.

She graduated with high honors in the classical course at Western College, Toledo, in 1888. She was gifted as a speaker and writer. Her graduating oration was said to have surpassed anything that had ever been delivered in the history of the college; but the hopes of her friends were never realized, she having died the year following her graduation.

+ 4 F    iii. Martha Jane Greenlee was born on 18 Sep 1860 in Buckingham, Tama Co, IA.

+ 5 F    iv. Anna Greenlee was born on 29 Sep 1862 in Toledo, Tama Co, IA.

After the death of her first husband, Mary Jane (Guiler) Greenlee later married a Mr. Edy about 1866.


Second Generation


4. Martha Jane Greenlee (Peter Patterson1) was born on 18 Sep 1860 in Buckingham, Tama Co, IA.

She wrote short stories and other articles for publication, and not without encouragement. The Christian Intelligencer offered to print and pay for anything she might contribute.

Martha married George Hale Cotton, son of Joseph Cotton and Susan Ford, on 30 Jun 1884 in Toledo, Tama Co, IA. George was born on 12 Oct 1857 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co, IN.

He was a minister of the Reformed Church in America; resided at Traer and Des Moines, Iowa; Salem, South Dakota; New Brunswick and Dumont, New Jersey; New York City.

   6 F    i. Mary Jane Cotton was born on 25 Jun 1887.

   7 M    ii. George Cotton was born on 21 Sep 1890 and died on 30 Sep 1890.

   8 F    iii. Anna Alvira Cotton was born on 28 Feb 1894.

5. Anna Greenlee (Peter Patterson1) was born on 29 Sep 1862 in Toledo, Tama Co, IA.

Anna married Charles Clinton Wallace, son of Thomas D. Wallace and Sarah Nickols, on 19 Nov 1885 in Toledo, Tama Co, IA. Charles was born on 27 Jun 1859 in Chariton, Lucas Co, IA and died on 10 May 1898 in Des Moines, Polk Co, IA at age 38.

Children from this marriage were:

   9 M    i. Laurence Greenlee Wallace was born on 19 Aug 1886.

   10 F    ii. Martha Lucile Wallace was born on 28 Nov 1893.
